RECOMPOSE PRESENTS: Laura Sullivan Cassidy – Environmental End of Life Care
While in architecture school in 2011, Recompose founder and human composting pioneer Katrina Spade began thinking about updating contemporary death care practices with a sustainable alternative, one that would nourish the land rather than take away from it. After years of extensive research with green death care experts, ecologists, biologists, legislators and more, human composting emerged. This highly natural form of care (which is also sometimes called terramation or natural organic reduction) has been legal in Washington State since 2019 and is now legal in 14 states total. In this visual, conversational 45-minute presentation, I will provide an easy-to-understand framework for how human composting works and why this end-of-life option is such a benefit to the earth and to the human experience of grief and loss. We can then use about 15 minutes or so for Q and A so that we can have a valuable dialog and exchange. —Laura Sullivan Cassidy, Outreach + Community + Client Experience, Recompose
